Special Report: Peter’s Principles – Part 3

December 30, 2018

This is the Part-3 of the Peter’s Principles series. You can read Part-1 here and Part-2 here.

In this series, we are discussing Peter’s Principles as described in his book Beating the Street.

To say that Peter Lynch beat the market would be a severe act of discounting his performance. Lynch managed Fidelity’s Magellan Fund from 1977 to 1990 and clocked a CAGR of 29.2%. Every US$ 1 invested in his fund in 1977 grew to more than US$ 27 by 1990. Lynch retired in 1990 at the age of 46.

Special Report: Peter’s Principles – Part Deux

November 30, 2018

This is the Part-2 of the Peter’s Principles series. To read Part-1 click here.

Peter Lynch managed Fidelity’s Magellan Fund from 1977 to 1990 and stacked up a CAGR of 29.2%. “Invest in what you know” is Lynch’s mantra and he is of the opinion that individual investors have the edge over the fund managers, because they can spot good investments in their day-to-day lives before any Wall Street analyst.

In the previous post, I wrote about the first seven principles. In this, I’ll skip the 8, 9 and 10th because I feel they may not be very relevant today. So let’s jump to principle number 11.

Special Report: Peter’s Principles

October 31, 2018

Peter Lynch is a legendary investor whose investment record remains unmatched. He managed Fidelity’s Magellan Fund and stacked up annual returns in excess of 29 percent per annum from 1977 to 1990.

The term tenbagger was coined by Lynch. One Up On Wall Street is his most famous book. His other book — Beating the Street — is equally useful and worth reading several times. In this book, Lynch talks about 21 investing principles. He calls those principles as Peter’s Principles.

This is the Part-1 of the Peter’s Principles series.

Special Report: A Few Thoughts on Reading and Retaining

September 30, 2018

A Safal Niveshak reader (let’s call him Mr. V) recently asked me a question. I am paraphrasing his words for brevity.

Hi Anshul,

In last few years, I have read more than 50 books and 300 blog posts on investing. I am very structured in my reading process. I don’t rush while reading. I diligently take notes. Plus, I record everything I read. Please see the excel that I attached. [He had kept a meticulous record of every book and blog post along with dates and remarks for each]

While I can comfortably recall the contents of a book, it’s not the same with blogs and articles. Looking back I was surprised that I don’t remember the contents of many of the older read blogs. I don’t even faintly remember. Hasn’t all the effort in reading these 300 articles gone waste if I am not able to use such readings when needed?  [Read more…] about Special Report: A Few Thoughts on Reading and Retaining

Pay it Forward

July 31, 2018

In June 2016, I found myself sitting with a bunch of wisdom seekers. It was a 3-day course on behavioural finance taught by Prof. Sanjay Bakshi at Flame university. We were like a pride of starving lions waiting to lap up every last drop of knowledge.

Prof. Bakshi’s mind is a fountain of insights and we had an insatiable thirst. No wonder the session would start at 9 am and go on till midnight. Even during the breaks, people would swarm him with incessant questions.

During one of the breaks, a course participant asked Prof. Bakshi, “Sir, we have benefited immensely from your teachings. How can we pay it back?”
